wayward O is enjoying team's road trip, working on new melmOmeter reading and also preparing fresh MLB-wide post. but wayward O works slowly and also is distracted by soccer at moment. what's on your mind today?

11:48 a.m. update: apparently eric bedard took himself out of a 1-1 game up in boston yesterday having thrown 99 pitches and rumor has it the seattles might be shopping him ahead of the july deadline.

O's are at .500 and still in last place. Time to consider scrapping the AL/NL and re-grouping the 30teams into local rivalries. (And, oh by the way, get rid of the DH).

Im down with regouping into local rivalries.

Eastern Division:

Orioles
Pirates
Phillies
Yanquis
Mets
Blue Jays

Red Sox can be in their own damn league.

As the MLB Orioles and the MLB Red Sox do battle tonite it'll be the CYBL Red Sox (still looking for that elusive first win)vs CYBL Orioles.

if you look at a map, there's no really good way to get six divisions with natural rivalries.

you could do five divisions like this:

1: bos., nyy., nym., philly., balt., wash.

2: tor., det., cleveland., cincy., pitt., st. louis

3: chisox., cubs., kc., minn., colorado, milwaukee

4: fla., tb., houston, texas, atlanta., (arizona?)

5: seattle., laa., lad., oakland, san diego., san francisco.

either way, Os play yanks, sawx.

Could it be that the folks running MLB know more than we do?

you could take toronto and every team east in the "eastern" division. (10 teams)

and houston and every team west in the "western" division (10 teams)

then you end up with twins, brewers, royale, cards, cubs, chisox, reds, tigers, indians and pirates in a 10-team "central" division.

but then how do you do playoffs?

Guys - you are bogged down.

First eliminate the DH – offer to the players union an increase to 26 in the active roste , and “exempt” the “classic” DHs (like Larry Sheets).

Six divisions of 5 teams each with 2 wild cards:

South: Braves, Marlins, Rays, Astros, Royals

Atlantic: Os, Phillies, Mets, Yanquis, Nats

North: BoSox, Blue Jays, Twins, Brewers, Tigers

Pacific: Dodgers, Mariners, Giants, Padres, Angels

East: Indians, Pirates, Reds, Cubs, Cardinals,

West: Rockies, Snakes, Athletics, Rangers, White Sox

this plan separates at least three 'natural' rivalries:

-- yanx & sawx
-- astros & rangers.
-- kc and st.l.

and it separates the chicago teams.

Except for Yanqs and Sawx they're all separated now. You can move the pieces around but I think it works in principle.

Under Sponsort's new league divisions MLB would have to have "interleague play" where those rivalries could get together mid year and pummel each other. Since there is no AL/NL dividing line and no All Star Game, perhaps the "Midsummer Classics" could feature some kind of tournament structure with the winners claiming home field advantage in the World Series.

The regional Divisions would definitely save teams a boatload of money on travel. THey couls maybe reduce ticket prices and charge a premium for the Midsummer Classics in July.

i'd settle for getting milwaukee back into the AL -- put the rangers in the west and put brewers in central -- and scaling back interleague play.

mora, huff and millar lead team in RBIs. not too surprising, i guess, but very, very interesting.

alarming is a better word.

we should have drafted smoak for this very reason.

joe, i know where you're coming from, but i tend to agree with those who argue indiv. picks don't translate to MLB production.

you take the shiniest beads and either play 'em or try and trade up.

very true

drafting for your needs vs. taking best guy available - i suppose it's all a crapshoot in the end

the moral of the story is the fact that Millar, Mora and Huff are our power guys (besides The Stick, obviously) and...what the hell can we do about it?

There's no future in Mora, Millar, Huff
